I love the age of the computer. Opening up my word processing software, I can type out any of my thoughts. After “selecting all;” I can then change the font, the type size, bold, italicize, align, and a myriad of other stylistic changes. The beauty of it all is that no matter how many times I change the appearance of my words; the content remains the same!
It would be wonderful if we could do the same with our past experiences. Too many times our present life is dictated by events and people who haunt us from the past! We find ourselves unhappy and unable to enjoy the moment because of some slight, a critical comment, or an injustice that occurred years ago! In short, the past places strangle hold on who we are today and how we feel about ourselves tomorrow!
By now, you are thinking to yourself that the past cannot be changed. I cannot argue with your reasoning either. However, you do have the power to change how you view the past. That shift in mindset will enable you to release the grip of negativity it holds upon you!
All of us have felt the deep sting of hurt! It is what makes us human and it is one of the few common experiences that all of us have in common! You were subjected to a cruel act or somebody severely criticized you! A derogatory comment was made behind you back by somebody that you valued as a true friend. Your trust was betrayed, leaving you to cry in a dark room by yourself. Yes, we do indeed share familiar scars!
Now, focus on those times when you were most hurt in the past. Feel the pain exactly as you sensed it when it all happened! Remember the anger, surprise, sorrow, and disappointment that flooded every inch of your body! Then picture yourself forgiving the person or the circumstances that brought it all about! Not that simple, is it?
Let us backtrack for a moment. Assume that nobody on this Earth is perfect. That should be relatively easy to accept, right? Assume that everyone carries a certain amount of emotional baggage, all of it from their respective past experiences. Assume that each and every one of us tries to do the very best they can with the hand they have been dealt. Now make the final assumption that the odds of being dealt a “straight flush are 1 in 649,739. That’s right; it is extremely rare for any of us to be dealt a “perfect hand” in life. Instead, people just try to play the cards they have.
Every person that ever hurt you in the past was doing so only because they had not been able to reconcile their own past. You, however, are going to be different! You are going to choose to reformat your past! You will see each dastardly act, each unkind word, and each injustice for what it truly was; somebody trying to do the best they could with what they had! Then you are going to reformat that past by forgiving them!
Forgiveness is not easy, because it is an act of emotion. However, if you can make it an objective exercise; then the process should be a little simpler. It should not be any different than changing a font in a document. The content of you past has not changed; however the style has now been changed so that it can no longer affect your life!
