You know me all too well. The flight is completely overbooked and there is a wait list for people to get aboard the last flight headed out to Chicago for the night. You are a top-tier frequent flier and are hoping to be able to get yourself bumped up to the forward cabin. Since there are so many people waiting for a spot on the flight, you are pretty sure that they will give you the upgrade at no cost, just so they can free up an economy seat for somebody else!
I walk up to the podium and have a brief conversation with the gate agent. We swap boarding passes and I am given a long warm handshake and a nod of gratitude. Stepping to the side, I shoot you a self-assured smile and a casual wink of the eye. Your orderly world has now begun to spin completely out of control. You are consumed by an all encompassing fear; the inevitable is about to happen!
“Ladies and gentlemen, for those of you waiting for an upgrade confirmation, the first class cabin has checked in full.” There is a brief crackle and the speaker comes back to life. “Please take your originally assigned seat when we call your boarding area!”
I feel daggers being launched at me by everybody in the boarding area. The stares of disdain are enough to make a weaker man tremble, but not me. I have been through combat like this before. There is nothing I have not faced in air travel and no situation that I could not deal with! Yes, I am a million mile flier and a career road warrior!
